Computer Ports Explained

HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter – The conversion of HDMI signals to DisplayPort signals can only be carried actively using an active adapter. It is because unlike DisplayPort, HDMI does not have DisplayPort++ like functionality, and the signals from HDMI source have to be converted by an IC chip to DisplayPort signals. HDMI to DisplayPort active adapters also require external power via USB cable and can support up to 4K resolution. These adapters have male HDMI connectors at one end, along with a male USB connector and a female DisplayPort connector or port at the other end. DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter/Cable – This type of adapter/cable converts DisplayPort signal to HDMI signal. It means it takes DisplayPort signal as input from the graphics card or adapter and outputs the HDMI signal to the monitor. Most of these converter cables are passive and have male DisplayPort and HDMI connectors at the ends. You can also find an active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for conversion from DisplayPort to HDMI signal. Both active and passive DisplayPort to HDMI Cables/Adapters can transfer audio too and can support high resolutions up to 4K, depending on the adapter/cable quality and capability.

The models we’ve seen are inelegant, leaving a little nub sticking out of the side of a laptop when the cable is disconnected. We then ran a free system-performance app called AJA System Test Lite on the laptop to measure read and write speeds in MB/s . To test power draw, we used the 13-inch laptop, a Satechi ammeter, and a first-generation Google Pixel phone, and we noted the maximum power-draw readings on the ammeter as well as on the laptop’s System Report. Unlike on Apple’s cables, the plastic housings that join the metal connectors to the Anker PowerLine II cables seem sturdy and robust, built to withstand bending or fraying even with frequent use. Compared with most of the other cables we tested, these cables make a satisfying click when plugged into a USB-C port and have minimal wiggling, ensuring a solid connection. If you have a device with a USB-C port—such as a MacBook or other compatible laptop, an iPad Pro, a Nintendo Switch, or an Android phone—you need a cable to charge it and to transfer data to and from other devices. Unfortunately, when it comes to USB-C, even cables that look identical can behave very differently—for instance, a cable that charges your phone at top speed might be sluggish at transferring music files, or vice versa. We’ve tested 78 cables and 16 adapters to help you find the right one for your needs without overspending.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cables are the new standard for audio and video connections. Everything from televisions to Blu-ray players to video game consoles are built with HDMI today. HDMI is fully digital, providing video resolutions of 4096 x 2160 . There was a point where only some HDMI was capable of 4K, but any modern HDMI cable should be 4K ready. From a small basic 3’ cable to a high-grade 50’ cable, you should be getting 4K quality on any TV or monitor. To save money when experimenting with different antennas and readers. If an application is still in the testing phase, several different antennas and/or readers can be purchased for experimentation.

If the card inserted into the slot does not match the backplane connector, the interface will not function. The intra-building port of the equipment or subassembly is suitable for connection to intra-building or unexposed wiring or cabling only. The intra-building port of the equipment or subassembly MUST NOT be metallically connected to interfaces that connect to the Outside Plant or its wiring. These interfaces are designed for use as intra-building interfaces only (Type 2 or Type 4 ports as described in GR-1089-CORE, Issue 4) and require isolation from the exposed OSP cabling. The addition of Primary Protectors is not sufficient protection in order to connect these interfaces metallically to OSP wiring. Below you can see the differences between DVI-A, DVI-I, and DVI-D connectors. DVI-I has four extra pins that carry an analog signal, which is absent in the DVI-D connector. Most of these display converters are unidirectional, which means they are one-way converters. For example, a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter converts DisplayPort signal to HDMI and cannot be used to convert DVI to HDMI signal. The only bidirectional converter cable is the HDMI to DVI, which can also be used for DVI to HDMI conversion.

Passive adapters work because source ports can output video in multiple different formats, so no conversion is necessary. If you want to know whether or not you can use a passive adapter for a certain format, the answer has nothing to do with the port’s other formats. This talk about how easy or difficult it is to convert one signal to another is irrelevant here. Converting one signal to another is what an active adapter does. Yes, it is impossible to convert an analog format into a digital format without any processing. That’s because it’s impossible to convert ANY format to ANY OTHER format without processing. There is no such thing as “passively converting” a signal.

These display adapters or cables convert HDMI signals to other types. DisplayPort to VGA Adapter/Cable – This type of adapter/Cable converts DisplayPort digital signal to VGA signal, which is analog. Generally, these converters work fine, and rarely you may face compatibility issues with your computer or monitor. Some converters are limited to lower display resolution and refresh rates, and they won’t go beyond it even if the monitor and graphics card support higher resolution. For example, a converter can only support up to FHD or 1080p resolution@60Hz even if the monitor and graphics cards can output higher resolution or refresh rate. All these display converter cables or adapters are Plug and Play, which means you don’t need to install any drivers or software for them to work. Quickly charge, connect and sync your Apple Lightning devices with Scosche’s range of quality cables, adapters and chargers. It CANNOT be used to connect the analog output of a third party device to Inputs 3 or 4 pod ports – for this you will require the BNC to DIN Smart Adapter and BNC to BNC cables. We offer a wide range of BNC cables and adapters – BNC to BNC cables, BNC connector adapters and more. So in this sense, the quality of a cable does matter, since cables with more tightly controlled manufacturing will be capable of facilitating bandwidth levels beyond what lesser quality cables can handle.

DisplayPort to VGA active adapters are often mistaken as passive adapters because of their low cost and size and lack of external power, but all DisplayPort to VGA adapters are active adapters. Passive DisplayPort to VGA adapters do not actually exist, but active DisplayPort to VGA adapters are inexpensive and require no additional power, so they are often mistaken as passive adapters. DisplayPort to DVI passive adapters are not bi-directional, so they cannot be used to connect a DVI source to a DisplayPort display. DisplayPort to HDMI passive adapters are not bi-directional, so they cannot be used to connect an HDMI source to a DisplayPort display. All DisplayPort cables have the same internal layout and wiring. All cables are compatible with all devices regardless of what version of DisplayPort the devices are. DisplayPort cables do not affect feature support. All features of DisplayPort will work through any cable. There are no “special” DisplayPort cables required for inline audio, FreeSync, HDR, or anything else. ports may or may not accept video input through those ports.

If a 1080p 120+ Hz display doesn’t support 120+ Hz over HDMI, it’s the fault of that display model, not a limitation of the HDMI standard. This “support” isn’t actually necessary to display a format though. Even if a format isn’t supported by the HDMI Specification, it can still be displayed through HDMI. 2560×1440 for example is not listed in the HDMI Specification either, so it is just as “unsupported” by HDMI as 1080p 144 Hz is, and yet it’s implemented over HDMI on hundreds of different monitors. The same can be done with 1080p 144 Hz if manufacturers choose to do so, and they have done so on several monitors as mentioned above. While it is true that 3D is one of the uses for the extra bandwidth, there is no restriction on using it for other purposes, such as standard video transmission at higher resolutions and refresh frequencies. Support for the full bandwidth is not a requirement for a device or control chip to be HDMI 1.4a-compliant.

We’ve found the best USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI, and VGA cables and adapters to let you use your new computer with the video display you prefer. In early 2020, Intel announced a new type of cable called Thunderbolt 4. Most people don’t need a Thunderbolt 4 cable right now since very few devices require them, and you can still use a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 cable with a Thunderbolt 4 port . We’ll be testing some Thunderbolt 4 cables later this year, and we will add our full testing notes to this guide as soon as we can. DisplayPort to DVI Adapter/Cable – It converts DisplayPort signal from graphics card or display adapter to DVI signal for monitor or projector having DVI port. These types of cables or adapters come in both passive or active form.
